Antrim - the famous rope bridge at Carrick-a-Rede (the bridge) - courtesy of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board From April until July (when the seabirds are nesting): Cross to Rathlin Island, six miles from Ballycastle, lying between Ireland and Scotland and linked to both. From here Marconi sent the first radio signals to the mainland. Because it is on an important shipping route there are three lighthouses on the island. You will be greeted by basking seals as you enter the harbour. From here we will walk to the Kebble Nature Reserve which is visited by bird watchers from all over the world. In a 1985 census, seabird numbers were 69,989. On our walk along the rocky cliffs we will have a great view of the Antrim Coast. In August and September (when the seabirds have left Rathlin Island): We will cross a rope bridge, 80 feet above the water, to a grass-topped island, Carrick-a-rede. Under the rope bridge, built by fishermen, is a deep channel where salmon run past the opening of an extinct volcano. From here we will proceed to Fair Head, one of the great headlands of Ireland. The massive basaltic cliff falls sheer for 600 feet. On the way we will pass Lough na Crannagh and see the crannog, an artificial island or lake dwelling. |
